Where I’d Stay in Badami for Caves, Lake Walks and Easy Monument Access

I spent quite a bit of time deliberating on my accommodations when I reached Badami. The main factor in my decision was the small size of Badami. The difference between staying at the lake or anywhere else within a ten-minute walk didn’t seem like it would be a significant deciding factor in choosing a place to stay. Unfortunately, the convenience was much greater than I had anticipated.

Staying Near the Lake and Cave Entrance

The area closest to Agastya Lake and the cave entrance is where I’d point a first-time visitor without much hesitation. I stayed here myself, in a small guesthouse that I’d booked mostly because it was the only thing showing availability when I checked two days before arriving.

I was able to walk to the caves prior to sunrise on my first day without making any arrangements to do so. Surprisingly, that decision is one of the better decisions I made throughout the entire trip. The sandstone becomes a warmer tone in the early morning daylight, and I was also able to be at the upper cave alone for nearly 20 minutes. Additionally, the Bhutanatha temples and the cliffs surrounding Badami are an amazing sight when reflected in the calm waters of the lake. It was also possible to see that same view multiple times a day as a result of staying close to the lake.

What I’ll say honestly is that the room itself was basic. The hot water came and went depending on the sun the day before, and I had one evening with no power for about forty minutes. If that sort of thing bothers you, ask before booking rather than assuming.

Staying in the Main Town Area

A friend who visited a few months after me stayed slightly further into the main town and reported a noticeably more consistent experience, a proper restaurant on site, reliable air conditioning, and still only a ten to fifteen minute walk to the caves. I’d probably choose this option if I went back, mostly because the one rough night with the power outage is still fresh enough in my memory that I’d trade a few minutes of walking for a bit more reliability.

The middle option for accommodations in Badami seems to work out best for most people. It allows you to stay sufficiently close to the caves and the lake that you do not need to rely on a vehicle for transportation for each visit but also gives you a relatively good chance of staying in a comfortable room while you’re there.

Staying Slightly Outside Town for More Comfort

I didn’t stay outside town myself, but I looked into it before booking and would consider it if I were combining Badami with Aihole and Pattadakal on the same trip, which I didn’t do this time but probably should have. The properties here are generally larger and more comfortable, with better air conditioning and a quieter setting, and they tend to sit more conveniently for that onward drive the next morning.

The thing you give up is the casual, walk-out-the-door access to the caves and lake that made my early mornings in Badami so easy. If comfort matters more to you than that flexibility, this is a reasonable trade.

What I’d Actually Check Before Booking Again

Knowing what I know now, I’d ask directly about hot water timing rather than assuming, since the solar heating in some of the smaller guesthouses is hit or miss. I’d also ask about backup power, since that one outage, though brief, was the one genuinely frustrating part of an otherwise good stay.

    What I’d Choose Next Time

For a short, focused visit built around the caves and lake, I’d still choose to stay close, accepting the rougher edges in exchange for the early morning access that made the trip what it was. For anyone combining Badami with a longer Karnataka itinerary, I’d point toward the slightly more comfortable options outside town instead.

Among hotels in Badami, the ones closest to the lake book out fastest during the cooler months from November through February, which is when I went and exactly why I ended up with so little choice. I’d book a few weeks ahead next time rather than leaving it to the last minute, the way I did this time.
